About User Roles

See also:

Metrix is a multi-user system and has three distinct user roles upon installation:

  1. Metrix Full User
  2. Metrix Admin
  3. System Administrator (sa)

It is important to recognize that these are database roles, not users. Users of Metrix get assigned to different roles, and multiple users can be assigned to any role. Primarily, roles are distinguished by different levels of responsibility for running the application. The Navigation Menu options are different depending upon which of these three roles a user has been assigned.

Metrix Full User

The Metrix Full User role is assigned to people who are responsible for using Metrix for data entry or running queries and reports. Metrix users have access to the Calendar, Contacts, Queries, and Reports Navigation-Menu items and any sub-menu items associated with each. Metrix users can add, flag, and edit contacts, connections, interactions, create queries and reports, schedule planned tasks, create filters, and more.

Metrix Full Users cannot, however, perform any administrative tasks, like adding new users or importing data. Additionally, Metrix Full Users cannot permanently delete contact, Interaction, connection or address information. Metrix users flag these records for deletion, but only a Metrix Admin can then decide whether to permanently delete the record(s) or to restore them.

Metrix Administrator

The Metrix Admin has access to the Calendar, Contacts, Queries, Reports, and Customize Navigation-Menu items and any sub-menu items associated with each. In addition, Metrix Administrators can customize the layout of the Metrix interface by making custom fields visible or invisible to other users and adding values to drop-down lists, for example. They can perform backups of the database, delete records, import data, create new interaction definitions, among other administrative functions.

System Administrator (sa)

System Administrators have access to the Calendar, Contacts, Queries, Reports, and Admin Navigation-Menu items and sub-menu items associated with each. System Administrators create new users, performs backups, and import data.

Some tasks for different user roles do over lap. For example, all three user roles have the same data entry and access rights as the Metrix Full User. If a user is assigned to more than one role, he or she inherits the most restrictive permission (in this case that is the Metrix Full User).

The System Administrator and Metrix Administrator roles have some area of overlap, though the System Administrator is primarily responsible for issues related to administering the SQLServer back-end, and the Metrix Administrator is primarily concerned with administering the Metrix front-end.
